Ceramic tiles are part of the facade decoration of many houses in Lisbon. This tradition goes back to the culture of Moorish occupiers, polished in the Middle Ages of Andalusia from the Iberian Peninsula with stones (in Arabic "al zulaij" - Portuguese "azulejos") supplied. From 15./.16. Century the tiles came  from Spain and Portugal Mallorca ("majolica") and Holland's Delft.

The Carmo Church is a historical building in Lisbon, Portugal. The mediaeval convent was ruined in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake,
and the ruins of its Gothic church  are the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the city.
Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum.
